We bid farewell to a a wonderful group of guests today. It was a great mix of people, over half of them repeat guests and from Norway, the US, Western Canada, and NL. And it was a solid week of fishing with the most big fish our lodge has ever seen. It was a week filled with stories of fish that guides couldn't get their hands around to tail, and leaders busted. Guides reported as many as 48 fish hooked in one boat for the week with two guests, and when you are dealing with about 80% large...

Several of the guests here, and the guides are remarking that this is the most big fish our lodge has ever seen hooked and landed. Our guests are thrilled with the results, and every meal hour is filled with chat about the large fish they are seeing and hooking. The late afternoon fishing today was very good.

Almost all of the fish being hooked are still large salmon in the 75-90cm size range.

It was cool all day today. The day started with heavy fog which lifted but did not go far. It made for a cool, and mostly cloudy day. The river level is holding steady and the water temp has dropped to 60 F. Really excellent fishing conditions.

We wouldn't go so far as to say that the salmon are pouring in, at least not by Eagle standards. But the fishing is getting very good. Our camp hooked 28 fish today, of which only 4 were grilse. But there is still two hours of fishing remaining this evening.

Guides report that most are in the 13-15 lb range, but we have been hooking some leviathans! Guide, Bob Goulding, and his guests reported hooking a monster today in Pratts that could not be held back. They got three 'slumbering' jumps...

It is incredible how a few high tides can change things here on the Lower Eagle. It seems the last few rising tides have brought in schools of large fish, and yesterday evening the discussion in the main lodge after dinner was a little more than enthusiastic!

We had several large fish hooked and landed and released yesterday. We had a 95cm hen successfully landed, and estimated at 22-24lbs.

Happy Canada Day from the team here at Pratt Falls Salmon Lodge! We have a lot to be thankful for living in such a great country. And it is quite fitting that Canada Day mark our most successful day of the salmon angling season so far. Today our guest, Ray Smallwood, landed this beautiful 15 lber fresh from the ocean. And we have had several other fish hooked today.

Finally, our guests see the first bit of salmon action for this year. It has been a tough first 10 days to our season with the late arrival of fish.

Today, one of our guests hooked up in Back River, and a group of 6 went to White Bear River and landed 3. many more fish have been spotted and rose over the last two days but the success rate reflects on the river still being high and fish just starting to come in.

This has been our first ever week without landing a salmon at our lodge. However our guests leave in good spirits. They have had a very relaxing week. Enjoyed some great comraderie with the guides, and we have had spectacular trout fishing. No doubt the salmon are late this year. We have been talking to other camps on different rivers and the same story seems to be the case throughout NL.

It seems that salmon are a little late in most eastern parts of the province of NL this season. We would tend to conclude it is due to the heavy pack ice and late spring. We did see some early fish jumping in Eagle at the start of this month, however since our first guests arrived on Friday we are yet to hook a salmon.
