There's always a way to have some fun

It seems that salmon are a little late in most eastern parts of the province of NL this season. We would tend to conclude it is due to the heavy pack ice and late spring. We did see some early fish jumping in Eagle at the start of this month, however since our first guests arrived on Friday we are yet to hook a salmon. Even though the river is still very high, we don't think they are going in under our noses because with 5 guests and 4 guides on the water for the last few days, nobody has even seen a salmon.

This is not unheard of or alarming. In 2009 fish were nearly three weeks late, which was an extreme. Fishing late June is a risk for reward scenario whereby there is a risk of not getting fish, and there is a chance at a reward of hooking the largest fish of the season. Hopefully over the rest of this week Eagle will produce for our first guests of the year.

While the results are a little disappointing so far, we have some great alternatives, and today our guests had an absolute blast when we took them out into Sandwich Bay for some sea trout fishing. Late June is usually excellent trout fishing, and it did not disappoint! The group took back a lovely feed of bright pink sea run brook trout and several 1 1/2- 2 lbers.

Tomorrow morning the group will be heading to White Bear River for the day. White Bear holds fish longer than Eagle and typically produces results earlier than Eagle. So they plan to stop for a few trout on the way on the falling tide. A shore lunch of trout and toutons at White Bear, and hopefully some action with salmon. It should be a great day!

So, what is ahead for Eagle? We had reports today that fish have been seen on the Lewis, and Sandhill Rivers. Eagle is normally a week or so behind the Sandhill, so it is a good possibility a run of large fish will hit any day. The river is still high and for the past two days seems to be holding almost still. The RDF has ended and the forecast calls for sun and warmer temps so we expect the river will start falling by several inches a day. If fish do run in the river this week and next, the conditions should be great for our high water honey holes with cool and dropping water.

We'll let you know how things go on the White Bear tomorrow, and of course we will sing from the high heavens when the large salmon hit Eagle! Tight lines!
