Beautiful sunrise over the lodge taken from Backriver. Brian and Art having some success! (larger version)
The river has shot up to 2.55m (320m3/s of flow) and seems to be cresting. We have had a lot of thunder squalls in the area and it is hard to know how much rain has fell inland, but we are hoping that the river level holds and begins a slow decline. That usually brings better fishing. The fishing has been tough by our standards. Most guests just hooking 1-2 a day the last two days. We aren't seeing a lot of fish like we were last week. It could be a slowing in the runs, and it could also be fish moving in under the radar in the cold and rising water. The highest tide of the day has been occurring too late at night to be of much benefit to our anglers. The high tides usually bring fresh sculls of fish into the river.

'Slow fishing' really is relative when it comes to atlantic salmon, and where you are used to fishing. Our crowd is a bit spoiled!! Here, slow fishing is anything less than 4-5 a day for a rod. It's just the attitude we have developed over the years. Some guests that have been coming for a long time share our version of 'slow fishing'. Other guests, newer to us, have been quick to remind us that 1-3 fish a day is the best fishing they have seen for years in many cases. Haha, I guess it's a glass half empty or half full scenario! So while these last two days have been slower than the previous weeks, I'm glad to report that everyone here has hooked up and most have still hooked up many times, AND most that wanted to tag fish, have also tagged out along with some live releases. This is the first group to get a session in Back River this year, but the water isn't quite high enough for it to form up it's beat pools.

Be sure to stay tuned. Hopefully things pick up a bit again. The forecast has no significant rain until friday, and temps are just great. Cold nights and moderate days with no hot weather in the short range. There is some wet and hot weather in the forecast for early next week.

Pictures here are contributed by returning guests Brian and Art. The guys have had some success, and always know how to carry on and have some fun! Great snaps guys!
