The last couple of days we have seen more and more fish coming into the river. We have been able to see them porpoising and jumping in front of the lodge. Nelson hooked a large fish in Back River last night. But tonight, the action came to life! Theodore hooked a large fish, and Hedley and Nels went fishing together and got into a double header with fish estimated at 12 and 15 lbs! Nothing like a June double header with two large fish! Here is a pic. The guys certainly had a good time....

Eagle is still quite high, but dropping fast and pretty soon we will see some of our best pools forming up. A few of our guides have been testing the waters in the evenings the last couple of days, but have not seen fish yet. Reports from Sandhill River are that salmon are hitting the fence, but still in low numbers.

We always wondered if fish were going in unseen by us, because we often hear reports of fish being caught at 'The Gap', 16 miles upriver from us, before we see any. So, in an effort to verify this Dwight has been using sonar in the river. This pic is from this morning at the bottom end of 'The Slick'.

So with water levels dropping, and fish in the river, and for sure more to come, we are anticipating some great action any day!

Welcome back the the Eagle River Report for the 2016 season! We have been maintaining our blog since 2010, and find that not only do we enjoy doing it, but the feedback from our guests and readers has been nothing but positive.

We have been at the camp since June 3rd, and have been very busy making improvements to the lodge and getting ready to start the 2016 season. The weather has been a series of extremes, a solid week of rain and near freezing temps at night the week before last, to...

The time has come to clue things up on the Eagle River for another season. We are busy with some renovations, clean up, winterizing...the usual end of season 'goings on'. The other thing we do is sit as a team, enjoy a drink or two, and reflect on the season that just flew by. Overall it was a great season.

A Slow Start...
...The start of the fishing action was slow. Our first group had tough fishing as fish were late arriving in rivers all over Labrador and the Northern Peninsula of...

The river has stopped rising and the water level is now what it was 2 weeks ago when we had tremendous success.

It seems that there are not as many fish taking the fly. There are fish seen in pools all over the river, but they are hesitant to fly.

That being said, our anglers are still having great success. The 9 anglers that we have at camp for our last week are still averaging more than 2 fish per day. Last evening saw us record 100 fish for 4 1/2 days fishing.

I know that there may be anglers out there that find it hard to believe the numbers, but as we have always said, "When the fishing is slow on the Eagle it is still usually better than it is on most rivers when the fishing is good."

There is some precipitation in the forecast for the next couple of days, but it should not affect the water level for the remaining couple of days that our guests are here. TG

The number of fish taking the fly has slowed. There are still many fish being seen, but not all are taking the fly.

That does not mean that the fishing is not good. That is one thing about the Eagle River. We consider our fishing to be slow now. You have to take that into perspective. With fishing slow on here we still averaged 2 fish per angler. I think that many anglers consider this to be great fishing.

Once again we have rookies in camp. The rookie label didn't last long though....

Our friends from Duck Unlimited left last evening. The ones that fished in the morning were very successful.

Fishing is still excellent with Theo and Nelson hooking into 8 after supper last night.

River is still rising. Back River is back in fishing order. The Bath Tub will soon be too rough to fish.

More showers in the forecast for today, but clearing tomorrow morning with warmer temperatures.

This has been an unusually cold summer. The wood stoves are about to be lit for our incoming guests. This is the last group for the 2015 season and they should have good fishing during their stay. TG

So ends another week, and another group of happy guests depart camp. I had the opportunity to drive a couple of guests out by jet boat yesterday, and, they were happy campers. They had the pleasure of being guided by Ron, and the praise for this experienced guide was high. Not to mention they both had personal best catch stats. Bob remarked, "I only ever caught one in a day, it's not like that here!", admitting he had limited experience. Adam on the other hand, with much more experience...

Fishing has continued to be good. All of our guests continue to hook-up. Although the river is starting to rise the fish are still taking. They are a little slower to take the fly, but our newest group of experienced anglers who are here on one of our Ducks Unlimited are having a blast with 4 hooked this morning before breakfast.

One of our group from New Brunswick landed his first Salmon yesterday. It was a beautiful fish in the 12 pound (5kg) range. We joke with them that they learned to fish at home.....but here they are learning to catch.

We have had rain for most of the day yesterday and were greeted this morning with a loud clap of thunder and some lightening. we expect the river to continue to rise over the next few days. We are confident that there will
be ample fish for our guests next week. TG

We have seen a few straight weeks now of very good fishing, excellent river conditions, and some very happy guests. Many personal best fishing trips have been noted. And...there is no end in sight.
