While it was late coming, winter certainly did arrive on the Eagle River. We have been busy hauling supplies for the 2011 season on snowmobiles. Many of you might be surprised to know that we travel through the gorge on our snowmobiles with thousands of pounds in tow on the ice that clings securely to the edge of the cliffs. The gorge is tamed by winter and the river is a very peaceful bubble where the current maintains a hole of water. I can't help but wonder, "are there 'slinks' (spent...

Well; we bid a fond farewell to our last guests yesterday and began preparing the Camp for the Winter. Boats to put away, water lines to drain, equipment to store etc.
As we began the process it gave us time to reflect on the season and reminisce about the stories that were told, the fish that were caught, the friends that were made, and the laughs that we had.
This season proved that this Lodge and our Staff is second to none on the River. Our season saw many new anglers land their first...

Yes it's true. Another rookie lands her first salmon. It did take the second attempt. The first fish that she hooked she tried to lift it immediately out of the water into the boat; like you would do with a trout.
The lesson only cost her a fly a leader and a braided sleeve. She was still very proud and it only goes to show that good guiding and listening to your guide pays off in the end.
The water level on the river continues fall but most fish are still being taken at Pratt Falls and the Airforce pools.

I'm Back And So Are The Fish. The River is now at the lowest that we have seen for this season and continues to drop.
With the river lower and the New Moon approaching the fishing activity has increased. Today was all our guests land multiple fish.
We are hoping that this trend will remain for the rest of the season.
Sorry for any lapse in the blog. Computer problems caused an issue which I think I have finally resolved.

It's been a busy 'off' week the last 5 days. No guests were scheduled so the early part of the week was spent staining the buildings and putting lattice on the foundations.
A quick phone call from 4 travellers touring in Labrador last Thursday led to them arriving on the Eagle only 2 days later, so we didn't end up with an off week after all!
The river is dropping...it's been high for so long now it almost seems reluctant to move but it has dropped approx 3 inches a day for the last 3 days....

The fishing on the Lower Eagle is still good. I can personally confirm that fact. I haven't had much time to fish during the past 2 months but yesterday I took the opportunity to try my luck up at Back River.
I was only there for 2 minutes when I saw the first one rise. Unfortunately I was not able to get it to accept any of the patterns that I offered.
Disappointing yes; but when I moved downstream about 5 Meters the story was a little different. I managed to hook and land a fine Grilse....

Our Anglers spent their last day fishing and had very good success.
Each and every one of them hooked several fish and landed 2 or more.
Upon their departure they all told us that they had a great trip and look forward to returning next year.
Our wish is that when they return the water level will be at its normal level for this time of the year and the fishing will be as good if not better than they had this year.
The water level on the river is again steady and hasn't risen since yesterday evening.

This is so true when you talk about the weather in Labrador. The morning started cold and misty with a temperature of 6° C and everyone scrambling to get their wood stove lit. As the day progressed the sun came out and the temperature rose to 24° C.
All our anglers landed fish again yesterday. One fortunate fisher landed a lovely 14 pound Salmon. There were a lot of fish showing, but only a few were taking. This may be due to the fact that the river is receiving a lot of run-off and has turned a tea color.
The water level seems to have stopped rising and hopefully will start to fall again. With any luck the fishing will again start to pick-up.

We have had a slight increase in water level yesterday. With the rain and wind it did make fishing uncomfortable for our anglers, but they were still able to land fish.
It seems that there are still quite a few fresh salmon entering the river which is evidenced by the sea lice that are seen attached to the fish landed yesterday.
While there is still rain in the forecast, the amount of precipitation is lower than forecast earlier. We can only hope that it does not raise the river too high.

The river level in holding it's own since yesterday. This may not last long because we have had light rain since yesterday morning and the forecast is calling for more. Fortunately we only got half the rain that was forecast.
The fishing was fairly good yesterday with all of our anglers hooking up again. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next 2 or 3 days.
