Things pick up, and rookies steal the show!

Our last group for the 2023 season finished fishing last night. Fishing has picked up for these guys, and after a very tough season, it was a real treat to see rookies getting a few fish, and some huge smiles and satisfied sports! This week's action has been better than the last 3 weeks, which speaks volumes to what the heat did and the reaction that salmon had to it.
The river conditions were great these past few days. A steady decrease in water helped slow the fish from running straight through like they did last week. Water temps hovered in the low to mid 60s, and fresh sculls of fish seemed to come in quite regularly. The fishing still wasn't great, a bit below what this time of year should be. But, when 11yo rookie, Henry, plays 6 fish with the help of his guide, hooking 2 himself, in 4.5 days of fishing that is good by any standards. Congrats to him and guide, Hedley, for great instruction, great listening, and great results! Hedley remarked that he is going to make a great salmon angler. Paying attention, and a really good, smart kid! He was hooked once he got his first large salmon in 'the tub', pictured here. Then more hookups ensued for this young man. Great stuff!
Our duo from Western NL took my ear last night and it was great to hear how much they enjoyed their trip with us. Plans to come back are already on their minds, and the guys did well with the fishing, and really hit it off with their guide, Beatle.
We also hosted a couple of gentlemen from the USA with a fishing history on the Sandhill River. They were in search of a new place in Labrador to wet a line this year, and we're pleased they chose us. Fine men, with a keen sense of how to find a fish, according to guide, Bob.
Genhui and Yeyan, all the way from Beijing, were also rookie anglers. Genhui started off quick hooking a releasing a thick grilse 15-20 minutes into his first session. Yeyan proceeding to hookup during the week as well. Great guys and their excitement was contagious!!
All guests seemed to really enjoy the serenity of this past week. August brings about a beauty that doesn't exist in the rush of July fishing. It's quieter, calmer, more chances to explore the whole lower river, and this week there were practically zero pesky flies. The nights are cool and crisp. The fish, because of our location near the estuary are still fresh and silver. It was a beautiful week and a great way to end off our season.
We hope to get back and fish the waters again in late August/ Early Sept. then and end of season review. It's going to be a challenge to put the 2023 season into words. It was the worst year in history for the Eagle River. Always a little concerning when depending on a natural resource but we know that salmon cycle over 5-7 years and this year will likely have little to do with the next.
