Yesterday we said see you later to a fine bunch. They had decent fishing, but honestly not great. It was no problem to hook up with a fish or two every day, but it wasn't the action we are accustomed to. We are hearing much the same all over NL. We have had sculls of fresh fish coming in on the tides. They are fresh from colder water and are active but it seems once they are in the river any amount of time they are getting lazy in the warm water.

Lets touch on that. The water is way to warm for this early in the season. No doubt a continued result of less snow hence less cold ground water trickling into the river. The water level is perfect, but with temps hitting 70F, the fish are protecting themselves by being largely inactive. Reserving energy to continue upstream.

The weather is not looking good to help the current water conditions. Temps for this entire week are forecasted to be in the high 20c's. Not good for the water at all. We will be depending on cooler mornings and evenings for some reprieve from the heat.

This past week was nearly all large fish. A few grilse have been in the mix, but by no means is the main run of grilse moving in yet. We're happy to say that despite tough conditions the success rates and guest experience at the lodge are still leaving our guests with great memories. The new group in, facing this heat, were a couple hours late getting here yesterday. One chopper had a sensor fail and out of precaution has to land in the bush. 3 hours sitting on a labrador bog was how 3 of the gents started their trip! Nice thing about it was when they hit the water they had a fish landed on the second cast and another rising! That was 4:30pm, so I call that a great start!!! I hope the rest of the group experience similar success. Stay tuned to find out. We leave you with a collage of some beauty fish from this past group.
