This season thus far is nothing but a string of success stories. The returns are very healthy. I can't help but think that the shutdown of Greenlands commercial fishery, coupled with the high water havens that our salmon have returned to the last cycle has contributed to the impressive run of fish that Eagle is seeing. Guide, Hedley, stated yesterday that there was no time yesterday that you could look across the river and not see several fish porpoising, or in the air at the same time. Followed by, "she's full, the river is full".
The conditions have been perfect the past 5-6 days. The water cooled back to as low as 55-58F. It has steadily dropped but only to a perfect fishing level. The weather has been moderate temps with partial cloud cover. Really great conditions. Today, some much needed rain has been falling over the entire Eagle watershed. It is supposed to rain heavy tomorrow inland. This is great news and hopefully gives the river that little boost it needs for the next week or two.
Quantity of fish, quality of fish let's just say I'm confident to declare there is no better place to angle for atlantic salmon on this Earth. Seasoned, well travelled anglers tell me so, and I do believe it to be true. Lets talk about the quality for a second. There are bigger fish to catch on some famous big fish rivers, no doubt, but the sheer quantity of large salmon here on Eagle is something to ogle over. The ratio, even now approaching mid July is 25-30% large salmon. And just two days ago, a monster 28lber landed. Ocean fresh, silver head to tail, ready to rip your reel apart and 28lbs of it! Great stuff. The maxi grilse are plentiful and powerful. Yeah, we're having a little brag. Why not. The credit goes to mother nature, we're just doing our part to make the magic happen for our guests. It's easy when the stars align.
