The Return of the Maxi Grilse!
Posted 21 July 2017, 5:50 am NDT
It's changeover day here at the lodge. Our departing group has had a very mixed week! It started slow with really high water and slow fishing. Mid week we had some scorching hot weather and the water fell significantly and water temps rose as high as 68F. But the last three days fishing really picked up and we have seen a very nice run of our famous maxi-grilse. Beautiful, thick, high weight, 60-63cm fish!! We seen very few last year and were attributing it to high water and late runs, so this year we were holding our breath. They are definitely running now.
Despite a slow start to the week the camp totalled 205 fish hooked with a total flip on the ratio of large. Still a nice few fish caught in the 12-15lb range, and the ratio of large is approx 10%. Normal once the grilse run hits.
The river is still falling which is good as there is still plenty of water and pools are just starting to form up nicely. The water has cooled to 63F. We are expecting our incoming guests to have a great time! Here's a photo of guest, Doug, and guide, Ron, with a large fish early in the week.
