River Has Crested, Fishing is Good
Posted 05 July 2016, 8:51 am NDT
Our guests have had a great couple of days since our last post. The lodge is filled with stories and pictures of some great battles. Yesterday, Arve hooked what he described was the biggest fish he ever had on. Good to hear considering his vast fishing experience. It was a 1 hour and 45 minute battle and the fish still got away.
Guests are remarking how wild the fish are. Eagle salmon are known to be a strong strain of fish, but this very cold, and very highly oxygenated water is making for aerial displays with large salmon jumping as high as 6 feet out of the water. One of our guests, Jim, a very experienced angler, remarked last night how he is glad he has several hundred yards of backing on his reel, as he has needed it several times this week.
The water level seems to have crested and looks like it may begin to fall. There were heavy rains on the plateau yesterday, as reported by Terry who was driving into Goose Bay. Hopefully it won't turn to rise again. The fishing has been surprisingly good given the high water. We are trying to imagine how many must be barreling through the river with these ideal conditions and tides, considering that the catch rates are still very good.
Check out the 2016 photo album in our photo gallery. We are adding pictures today and will continue to add throughout the season. The picture here is of Beatle releasing a large fish caught by Michael. What a gorgeous thick fish. I have to remark how stable our boats are. That is three guys on the one side!
