Rookie's hooking up, excursion around the Bay
Posted 22 July 2014, 11:16 pm NDT
The last two days have been a lot of fun around here. Fun for our guides and guests alike. I don't think anything makes the guides happier with their work than when they guide a rookie angler onto their first atlantic salmon. Last night, Rookie guest Louisa hooked and landed not only her first ever, but also her second and third! Not a bad catch rate for a first time angler :). And today her sister, Marie hooked and landed her first and second, pictured here with her first! Pretty awesome stuff.
We have been having some good success. Our experienced anglers are doing very well, although it is not as good as expected considering the prime run of grilse is now on. The river is very high still and we just had two scorching hot, bright days. The water temp is at around 65 degrees F. The river is falling but there were heavy showers here this evening. We are hoping not too much rain fell inland to make the river rise again.
Every year this group likes to take an excursion out Sandwich Bay to do some trout fishing. Today was the day. 11 guests left Eagle and headed out Sandwich Bay to the sandy beaches of the Wonderstrand at the mouth of North River. The Wonderstrand is the second longest beach in North America stretching 56km along the rugged Labrador coastline. It will soon be part of Canada's newest national park. The Mealy Mountains National Park. Here we spent the afternoon wading in the cool Labrador current, and catching some beautiful sea run brook trout. They were not really plentiful but we caught enough for a fresh meal tomorrow and some were beautiful 2 1/2 pounders. Special mention goes to Helena, our youngest guest who caught the biggest trout!! All guests really enjoyed the day. Some hiked along the beach admiring the flora as well. Then it was a quick run to Cartwright to refuel, do a little shopping at the local grocery store and craft gallery. Our ride back in Sandwich Bay was a wet one...thunder storm squalls! But everyone had a great time and tomorrow's fresh meal of sea run brookies will be a real treat!
There are reports of lots of salmon still in Sandwich Bay and we are seeing a lot of fish in the river. They just seem to be moving through quickly and not taking fly really well. Due to river conditions of course. At the rate things are going we should have a healthy looking river well into August.
Speaking of August, we have some space in the first week, August 1-8th that we really want to sell. Salmon were two weeks late, the river is currently high. So in a nutshell we are expecting some great action in that time period. We have space available for 8 rods and our rock bottom price is 40% off regular rate. A great opportunity to wet your line on Eagle. I have grown up fishing Eagle in August, and straight out of the log books of my friend, Dave, who has kept a record of fishing here since the early 80's. It is normal to have a catch rate in the first half of August of around 3-4 fish a day and we have seen it as high as 8-10 hookups a day. Worth taking a look at if you have free time in August this year! Get in touch with Dwight if you have questions about it, or want to book a rod space. dwight@prattfallslodge.com
