Maxi Grilse are running hard
Posted 28 July 2012, 1:31 pm NDT
We were wondering when they would arrive as it is a bit late, but like the saying goes...better late than never!! The river is full of Maxi Grilse. Those right to the limit 62-63 cm fish that are shaped like footballs. Eagle is famous for them and every year we get reminded of why. They are incredibly powerful fish!
A new group arrived yesterday and they had a great start. The fishing yesterday afternoon and evening was very good. We are seeing a lot of fish, and the rises and takes are getting better as the water continues to drop.
One guest has been into 3 large salmon! One of them made a great spectacle this morning. one guide and guest were fishing below pump pool on the air force side when they heard a whistle! This was another guide, Robert, sending out a warning that there was a backing headed straight for them!! This was the backing of one of his guests, Bill, coming out of the Dabbling Pool and coming downriver full tilt!!! We didn't get a look at him but it was clear that this was a big fish. No jumps and it was going downriver no matter what! Bill came running over the rocks and retrieving line until he arrived at our pool, out of breath, and a smile from ear to ear. He lost it when it got wrapped around a rock and his leader gave way at a blood knot, but it was one helluva run! There were times when his backing was pretty close to the limit!
Yesterday, another guest, Kip hooked up with a 9 pounder at Inside Governor's and it took off! He played the fish hard and it was hooked very well. 8 or 9 jumps we counted out of that fish. It went around the big Governor's Rock and around the bend forcing us to pull anchor and chase it! It was still covered in sea lice being so fresh from the ocean and the power was such that he had never experienced before. After a revival in the cool water he was released to continue the journey.
Here is a picture of Kip with a Maxi-Grilse hooked this morning. A very healthy male measuring 62cm! Congrats on the beauty, Kip!
