River Settling Back...For Now
Posted 19 July 2012, 7:53 am NDT
The river has been slowly dropping back over the past couple of days. This may change as we have had some heavy precipitation. From what we are able to determine it was concentrated mainly along the coast so it may have a minimal effect on the river level.

The number of fish seen in the river has increased quite a bit; but anglers tell me that they are not taking the fly very well.

Yesterday was possibly the best results thus far during the week. The Grisle that we are seeing in the river now are the typical Eagle River Grilse with a large girth.

I was able to watch yesterday as one of our guests played one of these fine fish. Even from the deck of the lodge I was able to see that it was fish that was in prime order.

He described to me later that it hit hard and then ran him into his backing. They thought that it was a salmon. As he started to bring him back toward the boat the fish decided to make a run towards the boat.

He was forced to strip line quickly to keep tension on the line. I then saw the fish for the first time as it made a jump before deciding to go under the boat and slipping the fly with a final leap.
